Genealife in Lockdown - NFHM Blogging Challenge - Part 3.
Last Sunday I mentioned
that I had found the Monumental Inscription for Samuel Galbraith, my 2x
great-grandfather. Below is a transcript of part of that;
"In memory of AGNES
McNISH GALBRAITH b8 Nov 1812 d 17 Nov 1867 Yst day of SAMUEL GALBRAITH Merchant,
Ayr The above SAMUEL GALBRAITH d 24 Jul 1877 aged 62yr. Also his wife MARGARET
NICOL d 2 May 1893 aged 79. (left side) - Also JOHN and ALFRED GALBRAITH d
inf also his g- son GEORGE GALBRAITH"* (My emphasis)
George is the mystery and I
have spent time this week looking for him and he is proving to be as elusive as
some other ancestors.
Now you might ask, Why look for
him, he isn't a direct ancestor? Well, he is a mystery and I love a good
mystery. So here is what I've done, so far.
Samuel Galbraith b 1815, d 1877
married 1836, Margaret Nicol b ? d 1893.
Their children;
1) John b 6 March 1837 – 1837/1840.
2) Janet b 7 October 1839.
3) John b 28 December 1840 – d 23 January
1919.
4) Agnes McNish b 8 November 1842 – d 17 November
1867.
5) Samuel b 4 July 1844.
6) William b 24 November 1845.
7) Andrew b 13 April 1848.
8) Arthur b 22 January 1850 – d 1850/1852.
9) Arthur Galbraith b 11 August 1852 – d 25
June 1894 (my line).
Which one was George’s daddy or
mummy???
I was able to eliminate 1, 4, 8
and 9 from my searching. 3, 6 and 7 need to be researched further, before I can
say yes or no.
Janet, (2) was easy to
eliminate. Why, you ask am I looking at
Janet, when she would have taken her husband’s name? True but my thought was little
George might have been given Galbraith
as a middle name. No such luck.
Janet married Robert Gray in
1862, they had two sons, Robert b 1863 and Samuel Galbraith b 1865. Well at least I know her line now.
Samuel (5) was easy to find. He
married Jane Johnson King in 1870 and had six children.
Alfred Victor b 1873 d 1909.
Jeanie King b 1872 d 1936.
Daniel King b 1876 d 1909.
William Johnson King b 1878 d
1955.
Samuel Nicol b 1885 d 1943.
Spence Robertson b 1886 d 1963.
As you can see Samuel and Janet
used family surnames as middle names but still no George.
My Theories;
I know I’ve said Agnes is
eliminated due to her death but how did she die? Childbirth or just after? I
need to see her death certificate.
William and Andrew need to be
researched fully but from quick checks, I don’t think they will be helpful.
There isn’t a photo on FindAGrave,
so I might request one, to see if there are any dates, that weren’t
transcribed.
That should keep me busy during
the rest of the lockdown.

I've had the wonderful pleasure of doing research in the Family History Library, Salt Lake City, so have seen copies of the children's records.
