Books I use, October 2019

Image
This months book is one I use, when stumped by an occupation I have found on a certificate, a census or in a will. Not all old trades, titles and occupations are the same now as then, nor did some, like  Alaska yarn spinner, mean that they came from Alaska.  (It actually means, Spinner of mixed cotton and wool cloth.) I got my copy from    Gould    Genealogy, in South Australia.

Books I Use, March 2019 A New History of the Irish in Australia.

This is my choice for this month a new book that was published in 2018. I found this book to be a very interesting read and it gave me a better perspective, as to what my Irish ancestors might have gone through. The book has two sections and a total of 10 chapters, with an introduction and an epilogue. Section One, covers Race and looks at the Irish and their interaction with both Indigenous Australians and the Chinese. It also looks a various immigation schemes. Section Two covers Stereotypes, looking a such things as employment, crime and politics. Elizabeth Malcom and Dianne Hall have written a clear and consice history, which is easy to read and explains the way things were. I purchased my copy from Gould Genealogy & History,   www.gould.com.au     for $34.95, plus postage. I would recommend this book for anyone with Irish ancestors. Bye for now, Lilian.

Researching Abroad, Day Two

Today it was all about Scottish, Irish and a bit of English records, wonderfully presented by Chris Paton. Chris is a professional genealogists, author, international speaker and a good bloke. Born in Northern Ireland, he now lives in Scotland. Chris, busy writing. Chris and I.                                                     Chris, in presenter mode. Chris presented four fantastic talks, starting with A beginner's guide to British and Irish genealogy. Now I don't class myself as a beginner but it is always great to revisit things and have them refreshed in your memory. You might also learn something new, I know I did. Chris gave an overview of important dates and while I had read about them, hearing them explained...

Adelaide, Thursday 13th, Genealogy Day.

A visit to Adelaide, for a genealogist, should include a visit to Gould Genealogy, at Nova Gardens. I had asked Alona, if she could find several books, for me. Two were and I also picked up two on German research. It was lovely to see Alona and her cute car. The photo book will be very useful, for my UTAS course. The Latin Glossary is small enough to take with me, when I'm looking at documents. Paul had spent that time, sitting in the car, that morning tea, was on the cards. From Nova Gardens we  went to Gress Cross and State Records of South Australia. Very helpful staff. More next post. Bye for now, Lilian.

My DNA Discovery Part 2

I'm still very new to the world of DNA but I did enter my results on to the GEDmatch site and have made a distant connection. Well he found me. We are very, something like 6 generations ago, related. That does take it back overseas, somewhere. We will both have to do some research on it. The person I though might be related, isn't but we do share a surname, in the ancestors. Again more digging. So while I was in the mode for DNA(ing) I did a one-to-many search and have found a closer match, only 4.5 generations back. I'm now working up the courage to contact him to see if there is a solid connection. Must re-read Kerry Farmer's book, DNA for genealogists, from Unlock the Past. (Gould Genealogy are the supplier). Bye for now, Lilian
