Adding Twigs and Leaves

I have started using the program WeAre.xyz, on line to do my One-Place Study and now my Galbraith Family line. I have done Samuel Galbraith, my direct line and have now decided to add his sister Jean Galbraith and what a merry path she has lead me on! Jean Galbraith born 27 April 1811 in Dalrymple, Scotland to John Galbraith and his wife Agnes McNish. Married George Donald on 11 June 1830 in Ayr, Scotland.  And the search for children began. My Brother's Keeper program has listed, Thomas 1835, George 1836, Agnes 1837, James 1842, Janet 1844, George 1846, William 1849, Jean 1851, and Susan 1854. Yes, two Georges' but the first little George died on the voyage from Scotland in 1837 and Jean and George reused the name. (Something the Galbraith family does very well.)   Searching the Scotland's People website for any births etc. I found John 1831 and two Thomas', one born 1833 and the second 1835. Yes, the first one died.  Now this is the conundrum WHERE IS JOHN? O...

Rabbit Holes, (or Wombat Holes)

I have been busy with my One-Place Study, that my own family tree has been neglected. This past Saturday saw me do a Tree Check on my Ancestry tree. I found a strange name and had no idea where she came from, time to dig deeper and find out. The name I had was Lola Jean Galbraith and I had her as a daughter of William Cameron Galbraith and his wife Jean (or Eugene). William and Jean have a daughter Jean Kathleen but here is where it got interesting. Facts I had 1) William was the son of Arthur Galbraith and Mary Ann Grant. Born 17 March 1890.                       2) Little brother to Arthur Alfred Victor Galbraith, born 1885                       3) Married in 1913, Jean Elizabeth Martin.                    4) Had five children, Jean 1913, William 1916, Alfred 1918, Geoffrey 1923 and Peter c1935. In my ...

Reflection.

As I look towards a 'big' birthday,  Judy G Russell  in her blog post, The passing of time , got me thinking about my six closest ancestors and how old they were when they died. 1998 was the first time I passed the age of  my paternal grandmother, Louisa Abberton, nee Nicolls. Louisa died in childbirth, not uncommon for the time, aged 43yrs, sadly the baby boy also died. 2002 was the next time and it was my maternal grandmother Evelyn Galbraith nee Jasper. Evelyn, aged 47yrs,  had delivered her 10th child when she succumbed to a pre-existing illness. The baby boy lived. 2003 and it was my paternal grandfather Thomas Abberton.   TB claimed his life, aged 49yrs, again not that uncommon, he left seven children orphaned. 2017 was the year I passed my dad,   Matthew Abberton, aged 62yrs. That leaves just two, my maternal grandfather   Arthur Galbraith he was 81yrs and 41 days when he passed. Still a long way off. Then my mum, Lilian Abberton,...

Have I found them?????

I my previous blog post, Theory , I speculated that the parents of Margaret Kidston NICOL, were John NICOL and Janet GRAY. Well… The spelling of NICOL has been consistent in the documents I have found but some trees and documents have had the spelling NICHOL. I search using both spellings.   Research Question. Who are the parents of Margaret Kidston NICOL born 1820? What I found. Well scrap the year of birth. I really should stick to what is in front of me and really review the documents. Like: ALL the census records, on Scotland’s People, from 1851 through to 1891 have Margaret’s place of birth as being Gargunnock, Stirlingshire, with her age range being from 36 in 1851 to 76 in 1891. Making a year of birth being 1816. Her 1893 death certificate has her age as 79, and no place of birth. Making the year of birth as 1816.   I found a birth for Margaret NICHOL, daughter of John NICHOL and Margaret ROBERTSON in 1816 in Stirling. On Margaret’s marri...

A Theory, please comment.

https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/guides/research-guides/forenames#Forenames%20and%20naming%20patterns   The spelling of NICOL has been consistent in the documents I have found but some trees have had the spelling NICHOL. I search using both spellings.   Research Question. Who are the parents of Margaret Kidston NICOL born 1820?   Information. 1)    Death Certificate: Statutory Deaths, 578/00 0179, parents given as William NICOL and Jane HARGRAVES. 2)    The Morrison Family Tree on Ancestry by lbowman222, (a distant cousin), has the parents as Henry NICHOL and Catherine BRINGING. Theory. Margaret’s parents are John NICOL and Janet GRAY. Working it out. 1)    Using Scotland’s People, I searched for the marriage of William NICOL and Jane HARGRAVES in a 15-year period from 1805 to 1820, there were no results. I then searched for the birth of Margaret, with the above parents, using the same timeframe, there wer...

Reigns in my Family

This year, 2022, marks 70 years since Queen Elizabeth 11 ascended the throne and commentators have been saying that for most people, she is the only monarch we have known. (I’m talking Commonwealth countries here.) This got me thinking, “ How many monarchs did my ancestors have in their lifetimes?”   I’ve gone back to my 2xGreat grandparents and worked it out. I have two German 2xGreat grandparents, so while I have included their names, I haven’t included any monarchs. MONARCH (numbered for ease of recording) 1) George III 25 October 1760 – 29 January 1820 2) George IV 29 January 1820 – 26 June 1830 3) William IV 26 June 1830 – 20 June 1837 4) Victoria 20 June 1837 – 22 January 1901 5) Edward VII 22 January 1901 – 6 May 1910 6) George V 6 May 1910 - 20 January 1936 7) Edward VIII 20 January 1936 – 11 December 1936 8) George VI 11 December 1936 – 6 February 1952 9) Elizabeth II 6 February 1952 - present Name/Monarch Number 1 ...
