YTTRIUM Yttrium is a chemical element with the symbol Y and the atomic number 39. It also has an atomic weight of 88.9. It is used in making phosphors and exposure to it can cause lung disease. It is a soft silver-metallic classed as a transitional metal in the group 3. It is also listed as a rare earth mineral. Discovered by Johan Gadolin in 1794, it was first isolated by Carle Gustav Mosander in 1840. Named after Ytterby, a Swedish village, near where it was found.
