COONABARABRAN,  (Co. Gowen) 31°16’S 149°16’E

From the Aboriginal meaning Inquisitive person. Settled in the 1840s, Coonabarabran is on the Castlereagh River. Close to both the Warrumbungle National Park and the Siding Spring Observatory.

An armillary sundial, presented on 16 October 2009, to celebrate 35 years of the Angle-Australian Telescope.

COOTAMUNDRA (Co. Harden) 34°38’S 148°02’E

From the Aboriginal meaning turtles. Settled in 1830s. Once home to Sir Donald Bradman, an Australian cricket player.

 




COWRA,  (Co. Bathurst) 33°59’S 148°41’E

From the Aboriginal meaning rocks. Settled in 1833 by John Grant. Cowra was the site of a Prisoner of War Camp during World War 2 and on the night of 5 August 1944, 1,104 Japanese prisoners escaped. This became known as the Cowra Breakout  Cowra also has beautiful Japanese Gardens.

  1. 3/3 for me for visits. My indigenous ancestors came from near Coonabarabran and the Currys were in Cowra for a time.
