Oatley is 18km from the Sydney CBD.

Named after the convict James Oatley Snr, a convict clockmaker, he was transported in 1814 for live on the Marquis of Wellington.  In 1821 Governor Macquarie appointed him overseer of the Town Clock at the Hyde Park Barracks. For his installation James was given a conditional pardon.

Lost in DNA Weekend Part 1. (my 600th post)

Now the title of this post might have you scratching your head and wondering, 'what is she going on about?'  But if you belong to the Society of Australian Genealogists,  https://www.sag.org.au/   you will know what I'm talking about. Twice a year the Society has 'Lost In' weekends, covering a wide range of topics, some are face-to-face and some are webinars. Both are great. This past weekend was held at the Portside Conference Centre, Sydney, on Saturday and Sunday. Some of the group, early on Saturday morning. The room was filled, both days. The topic for the weekend was DNA and whilst we aren't NCIS Agents, looking for a killer, we are still trying to find that elusive ancestor, who is just out of our reach. Or so they thought! April 1 – A for ARNCLIFFE

Arncliffe is a   suburb of Sydney, NSW, Australia. It   has an area of 3.6km 2   and   is 11 kilometres south of   the   Sydney CBD, on the Illawarra   train line. It was established in 1840, with its name coming from a small village in North Yorkshire, England and today is home to a diverse population. It is also where I spent the first eight and a bit years of my life.   I attended Althestane Public school, from Kinder to the start of Year 4. The school is named after Althestane, a notable home in the area, with magnificent magnolia trees. These trees were left in the school yard and last time I went past they were still there. My elder sister was one of the first pupils of the school, when it opened in 1952. In the 1990’s I also taught at the school and it was a funny   being back there.
