Accentuate the Positive, 2023.

Jill Ball invites us to do this every year and it is a great way to reflect on what you have done.

Remember to Accentuate the Positive

1. On revisiting some old research I found ...That I had mixed birth and death dates up, so I fixed that.

2. In 2023 I hooked up with a new (to me) living cousin ... Several DNA cousins but we haven’t actually meet, yet.

3. I'm pleased I replaced a tool I had been using with… replaced and upgraded my laptop. The old one was out of date. The iPad will be next in January, for my birthday.

4. My sledge hammer did great work on this brick wall ... nope, it didn’t work, might need a jack-hammer!

5. I was pleased that I finally read ... Elizabeth MacArthur's Letters, edited by Kate Grenville. It was an interesting glimpse into Sydney from 1789 to 1849.

6. I enjoyed my geneajourney to ...nothing this year, next year during our road trip there will be one.

7. In 2023 I finally met ... Rachel Frank, author of the book, An Uncommon Hangman: The life and deaths of Robert ‘Nosey Bob’ Howard.

8.

9.  I am pleased that I am a member of ... The Women’s Pioneer Society of Australasia.

10. I made a new DNA discovery  ... several new 2nd and 3rd cousins, including two who are mysteries and we are working out our connection.

11.  An informative  journal or newspaper article I found was ...not a journal but I found, in my paperwork an envelope and inside was the church bulletin with details of two deaths in my husband’s family. It pays to go back through that box of papers!

12.  A newspaper archive (Trove?) helped me ...I found a poem that my late mother-in-law had written as a 12 year old.

13.  I enjoyed my wander around ...  Bowral Cemetery, found and American Civil War Veteran’s grave.

14. AI was a mystery to me but I learnt  ... haven’t used AI, yet, still thinking about it.

15. The best value I got for my genealogy dollars was ... Diahan Southard’s DNA work book to go with her DNA book. She did a pdf one for those not in the USA. It will be very useful.

16.  It felt good to contribute to  ... Descent with my book reviews for the Society of Australian Genealogists.

17. It was wonderful to catch up with genimates ... at the 10th Anniversary Morning Tea for the Society of Australian Genealogists, Writing Group. Lovely to see friends again.

18. I wouldn't be without this technology ... digital camera, either on the phone or a camera.

19. I wrote ...12 blog posts, (13 if you count this one), this year. This one was interesting. Something to Ponder

20. Another positive I would like to share is ...that I have organised my research for 2024, into months with either a person, family, or cemeteries to be researched. Still fine tuning but it’s good to be semi-organised.

  2. A plan is a fine thing but all those rabbit holes we go down change the plans too easily.
I find Elizabeth Mac Arthur’s life fascinating. What a woman.
    Thanks for sharing.

  7. Thank you for your book review contributions to Descent Lilian. I'm off to look up The Women’s Pioneer Society of Australasia. And I love your idea of planning your year of genealogy research. I've tried to have a running To Do list on my blog but keep forgetting to check it!
