National Family History Month Challenge; Week 4

 This week Alex Daw has asked us to celebrate what we have done, this month

Study.

Finished my DNA subject with the National Institute for Genealogy.

Third month of Essential Speaker Skills, through Family History Academy.

Attended.

Afternoon tea at Government House, Sydney, to celebrate the 90th birthday of the Society of Australian Genealogists.

Hangouts and talks with the Society of Australian Genealogists.

Talking Family History, with Fiona and Michelle.

Co-ordinated the Writers Group, with the Society of Australian Genealogists.

Co-taught a class, at the research centre and co-ordinated the Australian Interest Group, via Zoom for Botany Bay Family History Society.

Research.

One of my half-sisters married a G.I., so I've spent time researching him and found some really useful information.

Added that I had verified my research, on two Ancestry trees.

Went through my hints and  DNA matches on both Ancestry and My Heritage. (Also did this for the three DNA kits I manage.)

Extra Fun.

Two trips to Mittagong, with a friend to see her elderly relative. Browsed some shops in Berrima.

Took Granddaughter, Miss 6 shopping for her birthday present and then we celebrated her birthday.

Took the car for it's first service.

Read six books.

Finished knitting a pair of socks and a scarf and started knitting a blanket cape for me, for next winter.

Made for quilt tops, as charity quilts, for a friend.

Made six bags, for a friend, for charity.

Made a quilt for me.

Lunch with a friend, up from Victoria.

Morning tea, with good friends in a lovely park.

Busy month, when you look at it listed like this.

    Oh my goodness Lilian, I thought I had a busy month but I realise now that in fact, I did diddly squat in comparison to you! How do you do all that you do? What is your secret? I suspect you don't sleep - is that it? I am particularly envious of your prowess with regard to knitting and quilting. These are two hobbies I have had to put aside because family history volunteer work is taking up so much of my time. And as for reading...pffft...I crash into bed every night. I think I managed to read one book this month. It sounds like it was a busy but a lovely month for you nevertheless. Well done!

      Thanks, Alex. I try to get away from the computer as in the past two years, I've spent so much time sitting at it, that I need a break. I've also got a good friend, who is just getting back into quilting and we push each other.

Now the title of this post might have you scratching your head and wondering, 'what is she going on about?'  But if you belong to the Society of Australian Genealogists,  https://www.sag.org.au/   you will know what I'm talking about. Transcription Agents.

Hi, As it is very wet both in NSW, Victoria and Queensland, genealogists just might spend their weekend doing research and ordering certificates. Below are the details of transcription agents, very useful people. Here in New South Wales (NSW), we have three transcription agents, Joy Murrin, Marilyn Rowan and Laurie Turtle. These wonderful people and save you money, when you want a certificate, to verify a birth, death or marriage. What, might you ask is a transcript? A transcript is an actual copy of a document, everything written on it. This is very helpful if you are looking for say a marriage and know they split-up. Part 3 of Our Trip, Alice Springs to Tennant Creek

Our first full day in Alice Springs and we were on the coach by 7.30am, to head to the Alice Springs Desert Park. Our guide, Renata, showed us around and explained the various plants and their uses. Indigenous People, look at the bush and think about how they can use the plants. They use them in one of three ways, for food - supermarket;  tools - hardware and medicine- pharmacy. The park has several aviaries and a nocturnal house and this cute chap, an Australian Bustard was keeping and eye on us. Part of the park. We also saw a Birds of Prey show and using my phone I managed to capture the Wedge tailed Eagle 'catching' food. It is such a magnificent bird. From the park we went to the Royal Flying Doctor Service base and listened to an informative talk on both the history of the service and how it works in the 21st century.  This is such a vital service for those living in outback Australia. Next stop was the Old Telegraph Station , established in 1872.
