Women's Family History Month, Bridget Goode

 Who is Bridget GOODE????

Well Bridget is anyone famous or infamous, she is a leaf on my tree that I hadn't paid that much attention to, but without her I wouldn't be here!

Bridget was born to Peter GOODE and his wife Mary, in Co. Galway, in either 1808 or 1816. I tend to lean towards 1808, just by using her age, at her death, her age at her marriage and the number of years in the Colony of New South Wales, stated on her death certificate. (I know they can be wrong.)

Now Bridget married Matthew TORPY, in about 1829 in Co. Galway and they went on to have seven children, Patrick, Mary Ann, Michael, Bridget, Honorah (Hannah), Catherine, and Ann. These aren't in order, I don't think.

In 1850, Bridget, with Peter,(Patrick), Mary Ann, Michael and Ann boarded the ship "Lloyds" arriving in Sydney on 29 June 1850. The remaining children arrived three years later.

Sometime before Bridget's departure her husband and parents die, as she states that her parents and husband are deceased on her shipping records.

Bridget is elusive. I don't know how she and the children travelled to Goulburn, but on 7 February 1853, in Sts Peter and Pauls Church, Goulburn, she married on Thomas FORD. Bridget and Thomas have two children, John and Frances, (Fanny). Both Bridget, Thomas and their witnesses signed the register with their marks.

Nothing more until her death on 11 December 1885, in Mummell, Goulburn, registered by her son, from the second marriage, John. Her death certificate states three females deceased. I can find two, Ann, from her first marriage and Frances, from the second marriage.

Searching Trove I find two references to Bridget, the first is regarding the estate of her daughter Frances, who died in February 1885 and the second in regarding Bridget's estate, also in 1885. Her second husband, Thomas, seems to be still living, but my research shows that a Thomas FORD died 1886, in Goulburn.

I can only speculate that she might have been with her daughter, Mary Ann, who lived in Mummell, when she died. Her place of burial is also a mystery as it could be either Cootamundra or Goulburn!

This elusive lady was my great-great-Grandmother, through her daughter Mary Ann.
