Rabbit Holes, (or Wombat Holes)
I have been busy with my One-Place Study, that my own family tree has been neglected. This past Saturday saw me do a Tree Check on my Ancestry tree. I found a strange name and had no idea where she came from, time to dig deeper and find out.
The name I had was Lola Jean Galbraith and I had he as a daughter of William Cameron Galbraith and his wife Jean (or Eugene). William and Jean have a daughter Jean Kathleen but here is where it got interesting.
Facts I had 1) William was the son of Arthur Galbraith and Mary Ann Grant. Born 17 March 1890.
2) Little brother to Arthur Alfred Victor Galbraith, born 1885
3) Married in 1913, Jean Elizabeth Martin.
4) Had five children, Jean 1913, William 1916, Alfred 1918, Geoffrey 1923 and Peter c1935.
In my digging I unearthed a death notice, from the Sydney Morning Herald, on 15 July 1963.
'GALBRAITH. Eugene Elizabeth - July 13, 1963, at hospital, late of 698 Bourke Street, Redfern, dearly loved mother and mother-in-law of Jean and Raymond White, Alfred and May Galbraith, Geoffrey and Eileen Galbraith, Adele and Roger Maclean, Doris and Terrence Moran, and loved mother of William Martin (killed World War 11)...'
Where did Adele and Doris come from?
Peter had died, aged 2 in 1937, so I could understand why he wasn't there. (tick)
I checked the Australian War Memorial website and found William Martin's death and that took me to the National Archives of Australia, for his service record. (tick)
Jean and Raymond's marriage was found and his birth and death. (tick). Still looking for Jean's death.
Alfred Charles was next, found his marriage to Alice May Waddell Coalfax, (May), on 17 August 1946. Found May's birth and both their deaths. (tick)
Geoffrey Henry proved interesting, he married twice, both times to a lady called Eileen. The first one in 1946 to Eileen Muriel Haydon, known as Hoare. The second in 1956, to Eileen Isabel Pearce. I was able to find births for them and deaths for Geoffrey and Eileen Isabel. (tick)
Now for the mystery girls, Adele and Doris.
Adele was the easiest, finding both her marriages, her birth, (in the death notice) and her death.
Adele Elizabeth, born 1926, died 2023. Married James Coleman in 1943, divorced 1952-53 and married Roger Hug Maclean in 1954. Also found Roger's death in 2020. (tick)
Doris is being elusive, very elusive and I hope that, that means she is still living. I can only find her marriage in 1956 to Terrence James Moran.
Now back to Lola Jean, well she does fit into my tree as the daughter of Jean and Raymond.
My digging isn't finished as there are some loose ends I want to tidy up, so off to order some transcripts, hopefully to answer some questions, but all good genealogists know, they usually give you more!
