May Research

Image
Yes, I know it's June but time has flown by. The end of April saw us leave for Roadtrip 2024, 28 days through country New South Wales. 11 main stops, many side trips and 3,057kms, saw us back home 22 May. Now how could I research while away, you ask? I didn't! May was my month to travel to cemeteries and take photos of family graves, and when home add them to my family tree program, Brother's Keeper. I had used FindAGrave and the Australian Cemeteries Index to check the location of the graves I needed and I had notes on what I wanted to photograph all packed to go. Tamworth and it's two cemeteries was the first place to stop. A lovely lady in the first cemetery printed maps of, showing the location of the graves. So much easier as it was raining and I could just jump out, take the photo and jump back in. The second cemetery as more challenging and I didn't find the grave I wanted. Moonbie cemetery was next and here were the family graves, I needed. It is a beautifu...

April 12 Ancestors in 12 Months. Andrew Alexander Hunter Magill

Image
ANDREW ALEXANDER HUNTER MAGILL   Andrew, known as Sandy, was born on Friday 17 April 1885 [1] , at Swamp Oak Creek, to Samuel Hunter Magill and Margaret Towers. Sandy was their sixth child and third son. His baptism took place on Wednesday 13 May 1885 [2]  at St Nicholas Church, Tamworth. His sponsors were Conor and Maria Martin, how they are related, I’ve yet to determine. The family lived at Kootingal, 18kms from Tamworth on a property call  Pine Ridge . It is here that Sandy grew up, eventually taking over the farm from his father. On Tuesday 29 October 1907 [3] , he married Edith Pearl Amelia Millar, at The Presbytery, Roman Catholic Church, Tamworth. Edith was the daughter of Ralph Millar and Amelia Jane Hughes. They raised a family of 10 children, Margaret 1908, Andrew 1909, Ralph 1911, Edith 1914, Samuel 1916, Patrick 1918, Edna, Nora, John, Mervyn. Andrew and Edith on their wedding day. Andrew died on Saturday 3 February 1945 [4] , at the B...

Ralph MILLAR

Image
This handsome gentleman is Paul's great-grandfather, Ralph MILLAR and I don't really know that much about him. I suppose what we know is the bare-bones of his life; Born c1842 in Maitland, New South Wales. Married 5 August 1879, Gowrie New South Wales. Died 18 August 1911, Tamworth New South Wales. Bee Keeper. Not much is it? So let me expand this. Ralph married Amelia Jane Hughes at Gowrie. This is not very far from Singleton. Ralph gave scant details for the marriage certificate, just his conjugal status, Bachelor, usual occupation, Settler, usual place of residence, Corinda.  Amelia did likewise, with Spinster for her conjugal status, Gentlewoman for her occupation and Branxton for her usual place of residence. No ages, no parents, no birthplace. Her brother and sister, William Hughes and Sophia Hughes were the witnesses. And it was by the rites of the Presbyterian Church of New South Wales. Locating Corinda was interesting, it seems that Corinda was the n...
