A Trip to Broken Hill.

In 2025, we did an Outback Safari, in a 4WD with our driver/guide. Broken Hill was one of our overnight stops and we didn't see much of the place. We promised ourselves that we would go back and explore and we did.

We flew out of Sydney on a wet Monday morning and were in Broken Hill by lunchtime. Broken Hill is on Central Time, so 30mins behind Sydney.

 Flying into Broken Hill

Picked up the car at the airport and drove into town and the tourist information center for a street map, (the car didn't have SatNav).  Walked around the town looking at the historic buildings. Broken Hill is a Heritage listed town.

Found our hotel and checked in. Lovely room and plenty of space in the bathroom, too. I picked a good spot as it is in a very quite spot, with no traffic noise.

Tuesday and we had breakfast in town and then drove 23kms to Silverton but continued out to the Mundi Mundi lookout. You can see forever and because of the recent rains, there is a tinge of green as well. Back into Silverton and nothing was open, so we drove around and took photos, went and wandered around the cemetery. It is an interesting place.

Went to the top of Line of the Lode and found the Big Bench   and had lunch at the cafe. You can see the whole town from the top and it isn't that big. The cafe is built on what was the slag heap from the mine smelters, it's big and dominates the town. Out to the cemetery to do our own self-guided walk. Some interesting graves and different sections. Only finished half as it was very warm and the were too many flies.

Wednesday and our two hour town Heritage walk took three hours as the chap leading it was very knowledgeable and was happy to explain things in great detail. We really enjoyed ourselves and learnt heaps. We and finished the cemetery walk after a spot of lunch.

Thursday was very windy and while it was sunny, the wind made it feel cooler. Looked at the street art and had a break at the top of the Line of the Lode and saw goats on the railway track, below. They were on the edge of the road, nibbling the grass when were got back down!

Some of the street art.

Friday we flew home. We had a wonderful time and are pleased that we made the effort to go back. Next trip, Lightening Ridge!

The cafe is the green building and the brown one is the miners memorial.
